Note that it s only a reference and has nothing to do with the real directory: just because you see a directory listed here doesn t mean that it actually exists Shell: The last field in /etc/passwd refers to the program that should be started automatically when a user logs in Most often, it s /bin/sh, but, as discussed in the preceding section, every binary program can be referred to here, as long as the complete path name is used As an administrator, you can manually edit /etc/passwd and the related /etc/shadow If you intend to do this, however, don t use any editor Use vipw instead This tailored version of the Vi editor is specifically designed for editing these critical files Any error can have serious consequences, such as no one being able to log in.

Tip You can see a nice hierarchical display of which parent owns which child process by typing pstree at the command-line shell. It s useful to add the -p command option (that is, pstree -p). This adds the PIDs to the output. It s worth piping this into the less command so you can scroll through it: type pstree | less. We explain piping in the next chapter.

Our self join shows us one level deep of members and coaches. If we look at the rows in Figure 5-7, we can see that Thomas Sexton is coached by William Cooper, who is in turn coached by Brenda Nolan, who doesn t have a coach. The hierarchy isn t all that interesting for this problem, but there are several analogous situations where the hierarchy is of considerable interest. Genealogy is one. Consider the data model and Person table in Figure 5-8. We record information (just a wee bit!) about each person, including who that person s mother is (we ll just consider birth mothers or it will get too complicated).

Therefore, if you make manual changes to any of these files, you should check their integrity Besides vipw, another way to do this is to use the pwck command, which you can run without any options to see if there are any problems you need to fix..

Although this termination should mean that your system runs smoothly, badly behaved programs sometimes don t go away. They stick around in the process list. Alternatively, you might find that a program crashes and so isn t able to terminate itself. In rare cases, some programs that appear otherwise healthy might get carried away and start consuming a lot of system resources. You can tell when this

happens because your system will start slowing down for no reason, as less and less memory and/or CPU time is available to run actual programs. You can get rid of these troublesome processes by logging out then immediately logging back in, but an even simpler way to handle them is to kill the process and terminate it manually. This is easily done by using top. The first task is to track down the crashed or otherwise problematic process. In top, look for a process that matches the name of the program, as shown in Figure 26-2. For example, the Mozilla Firefox web browser generally runs as a process called firefox-bin.

Encrypted user passwords are stored in the /etc/shadow file. The file also stores information about password expiration. Listing 5-2 shows an example of its contents.

Caution You should be absolutely sure that you know the correct process before killing it. If you get it wrong, you could cause other programs to stop running.

The relationship in Figure 5-8 can be read clockwise as a person can be the mother of several other people and in the other direction as a person has at most one mother and might have none. Now in real life, that last statement doesn t sound right surely everyone has a mother. However, our database is keeping only the data we know about, and unless we trace everyone back to the primeval slime, there will be some people in our table whose mother we do not know. Brenda is one. The table and model in Figure 5-8 are the same as our member and coach example, but a question like Who is Sue s grandmother seems a bit more likely than Who coaches my coach So how do we get information about people along with information about their mothers Just as in the previous section, we need to join the Person table to itself. (Don t forget to make the join an outer join so you don t lose Brenda.) The SQL is in Listing 5-5, and the Access diagrammatic interface for the join is shown in Figure 5-9, along with the resulting table.
