When combining data from two tables, you need to think about what it is you actually want. The examples with the clubs are rather contrived (as you have no doubt noticed). It is very unlikely that two clubs would have members with the same ID numbers and identical membership types. For example, a more likely scenario is that if Barbara Olson did belong to two clubs, she would have different data in each club table. In the ClubA table, she might be a Senior with ID 258. In the ClubB table, she might be an Associate member with an ID of 4573. If we do the union in Listing 7-2, where we select all the columns from each table, the two rows for Barbara will be different, and so both will appear in the result of the union, as in Figure 7-6.

When working with interactive processes, it can be useful to know that processes can run in the foreground and in the background. Before talking about the way you can start and manage processes that run in the background, let's talk about some process details so that we can understand what's happening. A process always works with three standard file handlers that determine where the process should send its output and accept its input. the foreground, the STDIN is your keyboard, the STDOUT is the terminal the process is working on, and the STDERR is also the terminal that the process is working on. As you learned in 2, you can change them all by using redirection. It can be a little confusing that the three file descriptors don t change when you decide to run a process in the background. When it starts, the STDIN, STDOUT, and STDERR for a process are set, and, once they are set, they stay like that no matter what you do to the process. Therefore, you can run a long command like find / -name "*" -exec grep -ls something {} \; as a background job, but you ll still see its output and errors on your screen. If you don t want that, you should use redirection to send STDOUT and STDERR somewhere else: by putting > /somewhere after the command, you are redirecting the standard output to a file called /somewhere and by using 2> /dev/null, you can arrange for all errors to be redirected to the null device.

We need to consider what we really want from such a union. If we need a list of names for a joint Christmas party for the two clubs, then we don t want anyone listed twice. The way to avoid duplicates is to project just the names from each table. The algebra expression is shown in Listing 7-5 and the SQL in Listing 7-6.

and STDERR are defined. Check the directory with the PID of the process as its name (see the section Managing Processes later in this chapter for more details on process IDs). In this directory, activate the subdirectory fd (short for file descriptors ). You ll see a list of all files the process currently has open, and these are the so-called file descriptors. Number 0 is STDIN, 1 is STDOUT, and 2 is STDERR. Use the command ls -l to check what they are linked to, and you will know how STDIN, STDOUT, and STDERR are set for this process. If the subdirectory fd is empty, you re probably dealing with a daemon process that has no file descriptors.
